If you’re looking into senior care, you may have come across the term assisted living, but you may not know what assisted living is. Assisted living can include a variety of services and activities. The main goal of assisted living is to provide clients a home where they can get assistance while still having as much independence as possible. Assisted living differs from independent living, a term you also may have heard, so it’s important to understand what assisted living provides.

What is assisted living?

The primary difference between assisted living and independent living is that independent living typically does not come with access to medical or nursing care. Assisted living is for seniors who can maintain some form of independence, but they need daily assistance and care.

Those living in assisted living might have some physical or cognitive impairments that prevent them from being able to live alone. They may need help with things like bathing and dressing. For these reasons, there is typically some nursing staff on site who can handle any issues that might arise, and there is usually staff available 24/7.

Assisted living homes also try to create a sense of community. They provide activities and potentially work with outside groups, such as the Girl Scouts. The goal is to help seniors live a full, enjoyable life while providing the help they need.

What kind of services come with assisted living?

Independent living may or may not come with:

  • Private or semi-private accommodations
  • Three meals a day, typically in a communal space
  • Medication management
  • Recreational and spiritual activities
  • Housekeeping and laundry
  • Transportation to and from appointments

Here at As Life Goes On, we provide a variety of options for our assisted living clients, such as three seasonal meals a day, laundry and maid service, social activities, and medication management. The goal is to make our clients feel at home, but provide them with what they need, including their privacy in their own private room and bathroom.

When it comes to assisted living, every client has different needs, so personalized care is important. For instance, we encourage clients to make their own beds and keep their room tidy, but we understand that this isn’t possible for everyone. You should always pick an assisted living home that provides the kind of help you are looking for.

If you’re looking for a great assisted living option in a beautiful area, As Life Goes On provides a level of care and independence that might be perfect for you. We understand that both community and privacy is important, and we work to give our seniors a great experience. Reach out to us today, and find out more about our assisted living homes and programs.
